Entrepreneur Independence Day celebrates what it means to be an entrepreneur

1st Anniversary Special Article

What is an entrepreneur?

Here’s the definition according to Wikipedia:

An entrepreneur is a person who has possession over a new company, enterprise, or venture, and assumes significant accountability for the inherent risks and the outcome.

Who can become and Entrepreneur?

Anyone who is willing to take risk…

Of course the overall idea of being an entrepreneur really boils down to 2 things…

  1. Generating a profit (being successful)
  2. Being your own boss and/or doing what you love and enjoy

But really an entrepreneur is a lifestyle choice. Because when you make the decision to become an entrepreneur you are deciding to create your own fate and it really is in your hands to assure that you are successful.

Step 1

So the first step to becoming an entrepreneur is the decision that you are willing to take calculated risks to be responsible for your own welfare and profit.

This is often the most difficult step because most people are raised to go to school to get a good job.

If you can get past the notion that you need to rely on someone else you are already half way to being an entrepreneur

Step 2

Finding a profitable idea.

This is easier said than done and thousands of failing entrepreneurs would be spared each year if they would just take a few small steps to research if an idea is profitable.

Step 3

Making a business plan

There is a saying that goes “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail”

A business plan ensures that you’ve thought out the possible scenarios for running your business and it reduces the risk of failure while increasing the potential for profit.

Step 4

Develop your Product

Your product could be something completely original or an improvement on an existing product. The key is to be sure that your target market wants it and you aren’t just guessing.

Step 5

Market your product

Modern day marketing is all about building relationships with your customers. And your focus should always be on strengthening the relationship with your customer through all channels of communication in your business.

Step 6

Delivering the Goods

Once a profitable idea is researched the next step is to find an efficient means of creating the product or service and getting it to the customer.

There are thousands of types of products and hundreds of markets. The best way to produce and deliver your product is to look at what companies have done in the past and see if there is a way you can improve on the preferred method.

Once your product is delivered you should consider how you can continue to develop the relationship with your customer to continue increasing profitability. You can continue to serve your customer by offering related products, partnering with other companies when it makes sense, and developing new solutions for your customer.

…and those are just a few ideas on how you become a successful entrepreneur and begin to take charge of your own profits.

Happy Entrepreneur Independence Day!

I remember the words of Martin Luther King Jr… “I have a Dream…”

Simple yet powerful words to describe the vision he held for people faced with seemingly infinite adversity.

While the dream he envisioned may not have been completely realized, significant changes have been made.

If you’ve never seen Dr. Kings speech I’ve conveniently included it for you here.

It’s well worth watching!

As entrepreneurs we have a similar dream…

We wish to be free of the 6 x 6 cubicles, and slave driving bosses.

We want our freedom and independence to have a say in the way we do business and interact with the world.

We want to take responsibility for doing things right instead of just following protocol.

We wish to enjoy life…

…enjoy the liberty of being in command of our days.

…and the pursuit of happiness by doing what we love.

I too have a dream.

My dream is that entrepreneurs will celebrate the risks and rewards of being faced with adversity…

…that we will empower each other to walk on

…and we wish to pursue the dream lifestyle that only comes to those of us who persist and overcome.

An entrepreneurs creed is “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness

On July 7th 2007 we held the first ever Entrepreneur Independence Day to honor our fellow entrepreneurs who make this life easier, more enjoyable and more entertaining for everyone.

Without the spirit of todays entrepreneur and yesterdays passed our world would not look anything like it now does.

On July 7th every year we celebrate the dance, laughter and tears that we experience when facing risk and adversity each day. We celebrate gratitude for the things we have, and the ability to settle for less than perfection but not less than greatness.

Let us do all we can to help each other and drive commerce for the livelyhood, liberty and enjoyment of ourselves and of the people we serve. People and Love are what make this rollercoaster ride called “entrepreneurship” the fun and exciting adventure it is.

I salute you and ask you to celebrate with me for 7 days starting on the 7th.

Congratulations on surviving another year and Cheers to a new year with new adventures!

Stay Well.

-Jae Jans
